It is controlled by a 10-member Board of Governors with the Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources as Chairman. The Institute headed by the Director General, has 380 employees including scientists and engineers.
The Institute has its Head Office at Islamabad and its main laboratory complexes are at Karachi and Islamabad. In addition, it maintains four Petroleum Testing Centers located at Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan. Complete addresses of contact persons at each location are given under hypelink "Contacts". Five CNG stations are also being operated by this institute, one each at Karachi (operation temporarily suspended), Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Islamabad.
